Work-Study Needed for Summer in Marine Bio Lab

A USC Marine and Environmental Biology lab wants to hire an undergraduate work-study for the summer. The schedule would be for 8-10 hours per week, M-F during normal working hours (8:30am-5pm). The tasks include basic lab maintenance such as washing glassware, equipment upkeep, making reagents, aliquoting reagents, refilling pipet tip boxes etc. Depending on prior experience, other lab tasks including running agarose gels, making standard curves, and field collection opportunities will be possible. Interest in microbial ecology or molecular ecology is encouraged.

Undergraduate Research Positions – USC Health, Emotion & Addiction lab is looking for undergraduate research assistants.

Assistantships are available as part of a Directed Research Course or can be done on a volunteer basis.  Assistants work on studies examining the role of emotional factors that influence tobacco, alcohol and drug use, as well as other behaviors that impact health (e.g. exercise and diet). Undergraduate assistantships are a great way to gain initial exposure to research in preparation for medical school and graduate school in psychology, neuroscience and public health. 

We are currently looking for research assistants who are either fluent in Spanish or have a full day of availability in fall 2013.  To get a better understanding of our lab, please check out our website (http://heal.usc.edu).

Undergraduate Research Opportunity – Advertising for URAP interns

3 paid URAP internships: Seeking 3 talented undergrads (biology/pre-med, math/engineering, and computer science/engineering) for a multidisciplinary cancer simulation team. The team will work to make powerful 3-D computer models of cancer user friendly enough for diverse research teams, while testing and refining simulations of invasive breast cancer, stem cell biology, and chemotherapy. Publication and indepdendent study opportunities available. Applications due May 10, interviews May 13-17, and project to run summer 2013-spring 2014. Grace Ford Salvatori Community Service Tuition Scholarships

The Salvatori Community Scholars program provides support to advanced graduate students who are doing community-based research whose experiences with community-based organizations can lead to new opportunities for service-learning students at USC.

Scholar(s) work with JEP’s Associate Director for Research and Academic Affairs, USC faculty, and one or more community organizations to develop service-learning projects for undergraduate USC students. Projects are to be jointly determined by the needs of the community, the academic goals of the service-learning course, and the abilities and interests of the Scholar, and might include participatory action research or direct service activities. All projects must involve undergraduate students in work that builds their knowledge and skills while supporting the Scholar in a community-centered project. Ideally, the service-learning project will closely correspond to the scholarly activities of the Salvatori Community Scholar.

This will be the last day that you will be able to join the USC chapter of Phi Sigma Biological Sciences Honor Society this semester, as this is the late date that membership applications will be due. Please be sure that your ENTIRE application is filled out, especially if you are applying for full membership. This means every blank that addresses you or needs your signature needs to be filled out. All other blanks that address e-board members or whatnot will be filled out accordingly later. Don’t forget that for the full membership form, there is a front page that you need to sign as well. If you do not have this complete, you will not be able to be officially recognized as a member by the national Phi Sigma organization. We will be sending in all dues and forms to the national organization by March 15, 2013, so please be prepared with your dues and filled-out forms at the meeting.
